Marine Ecologist and Enthousiast UseR
I am a research and teaching assistant at Numerical Ecology of Aquatic systems laboratory, University of Mons (UMONS). I spend my time between my thesis, guiding students through their master thesis and giving several practical exercises mainly in biostatistics.
In June 2017, I finished my master’s degree in Biology of Organisms and Ecology. My master thesis was focused on the seasonal cycle of dimethylsulfoniopropionate and dimethylsulfoxide by Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile 1813 and their use as biomarkers for oxidative stress. This work the outcome of the collaboration between the University of Liège and the University of Mons. My supervisors were Richir Jonathan (formerly Numerical Ecology of Aquatic Systems laboratory, UMONS) and Borges Alberto (Chemical Oceanography Unit, Uliège).
In the coming years, I will focus on two ambitious objectives. The first one will be to carry out my thesis while respecting two major concepts : reproducibility & replicability. The second objective will be to offer open source educational material to teach biostatistic with R to beginners.
The topic of my thesis is coral ecophysiology. I use a mesocosm to stress hermatypic coral ( Seriatopora hystrix Dana (1846), Stylophora pistillata Esper 1797, Galaxea Fascicularis L. 1767,…) by modifying the intake of the essential nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus). An adequate ratio N/P is one of the central point for optimal growth. My thesis is also a major opportunity to improve my knowledge in R.
I believe that scientists cannot disregard statistical analysis. However, this part of research is poorly implemented. Considering this major lack within many scientific research fields I would aim for providing the most efficient and user-friendly educational material as possible. Therefore I will produce interactive educational material involving interactive books, shiny apps, screencasts and more. More generally, I would emphasize on the importance of using suitable and relevant tools for analysis. R and Rstudio (with R Markdown, R Notebook ) are currently effective tools to produce reproducible research.
My thesis supervisor is professor Philippe Grosjean, director of the Numerical Ecology of Aquatic systems laboratory and teacher in marine ecology and biostatistics. Together, we will work to achieve those objectives.
